    • Free Wi-fi
I'm not sure how I feel about the concept of free wi-fi in coffee shops and bars - sure, we all like “free”, and I'm always careful to order refills and tip the baristas copiously. But, it can be impossible to get a table, because of wi-fi squatters. This afternoon, I'm sitting at Fall Cafe in our new neighborhood, and looking around at the other tables - each with a laptop - and I see a lot of empty cups - these people have been sitting here for hours. As you can see from the new signage in the window...
    • First Week in Carroll Gardens
We arrived last Wednesday, and unpacking is an ongoing project. We sold, gave away, or threw out most of our “big stuff”, so this move is not only about a new space, but also a lot of new purchases. A lot of the stuff we got rid of was from our college days, and had also already made it through our fire. I'm most excited about our new sofa, which Lisa bought from Room & Board in SoHo. Thanks to Jason and Liz for tipping us off to this place - we loved everything we saw there. Their furniture manages...
    • Free IKEA Sofa in Cambridge
Hi - one big piece of furniture left before our move Wednesday. It's an IKEA sofa/couch: There is some cat damage: ...but it would clean up nice with a slipcover from IKEA. Free, but we need you to get it outta' here by Wednesday, preferably earlier. Let me know! nedward AT gmail DOT com...
    • “No Reservations”
Went to the Common today to see a total chick flick: No Reservations [NY Times Review], starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart. I figured, hey, I've got lots of expired AMC Theaters gift certificates sitting around that have to be accepted in Massachusetts by law, and I've got time... why not? This film is a quiet, understated emotional triumph. Sure, we all love to watch Mrs. Douglas mope around the screen in a cute Chef's outfit, and who doesn't like Aaron Eckhart every moment he's on screen? The dude made Thank You for Smoking watchable, so he has talent. But...

    • Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Is Is”
The new Yeah Yeah Yeahs EP Is Is is out, and it kind of reminds me why they were worth listening to in the first place. From Pitchfork: Each aspect of her (Karen O's) stage identity finds equal expression on these songs, which only makes them sound more immediate and affecting. In fact, Is Is may be their most instantly accessible release, which is not a critical dig but just a way of saying it finds a good balance between alienating and inviting, between song and performance. It was produced by Australian Nick Launay (who recorded Gang of Four, Killing...
    • Ravenclaw
According to The Harry Potter Sorting Hat Personality Test, I'm a Ravenclaw - but just barely: Ravenclaw 75, Hufflepuff 73, Slytherin 68, Gryffindor 65 But, Lisa took the test for me, and is convinced that I'm quite Slytherin: Slytherin 85, Gryffindor 62, Ravenclaw 61, Hufflepuff 38 One of us has a perception problem, at least when it comes to me! • MTA Subway Map for iPhone
Since I bought my iPhone on June 30, I've been looking for an easy, high-quality method for viewing the MTA Subway map. The phone's built-in Photo application “optimizes” all photos and images down to a dimension and resolution that doesn't work well for images with lots of small text and details. What I wanted, was the ability to view a PDF, or large PNG of the system map – and to be able to zoom in and drag it around easily. Bill at iSubwayMaps.com outlined one such solution, which involved setting up a Yahoo! mail account, since IMAP mail accounts...
    • Good Deed of the Day
I'm doing some coding (and drinking iced coffee) today at Darwin's, near Harvard Square - and I did the unthinkable. I found a Nikon D80 (with a nice lens) left behind by another customer, and I turned it in to the staff. Yea, I surprise myself sometimes....
    • Puppy vs. Kitty

    • Moving Sale
Lisa and I are packing up our Cambridge apartment in advance of our move to Brooklyn in early August. As such, we are getting rid of a lot of stuff - most of the big stuff is IKEA related. We're going to be doing the yard sale thing tomorrow morning, and maybe sunday as well. For more info, map, etc. check these out: Craigslist Ad, with photos Flickr Photoset...
    • Smith Street Confronts the Corporate Takeover
Ooh, Cobble Hill folks are worried that their neighborhood is losing its charm, as cookie-cutter shops are opening along Smith St. Good thing our new apartment is closer to the Gowanus and the BQE... Smith Street Confronts the Corporate Takeover - New York TimesDespite the neighborhood’s predilection for remaining under the radar, compared with more-famous borough destinations like Park Slope or Williamsburg, the cost of opening a store along this stretch of Smith Street can now be twice as high......
    • Blogging for 7 years?
I'm totally getting old! I just realized that I missed my "blogging" anniversary... On this past July 11, this site hit the 7 year mark. wow. FIrst Post? It was about that brick of a digital camera (point-n-shoot) that I bought that summer. My original weblog was on blogger, and then was migrated to a ned.suckahs.org, when we set up the suckahs domain in July 2001. (More on that here.) In February 2005, I decided to split it out into the domain I use today....
    • “Designed Deterioration”, and the return of Links
Now that I have 2 days left at my current job, and a big move to NYC coming, I'm going to attempt to post more often. A new design for the weblog is also in the works, but not sure when I'll get to it. In that spirit, I found myself reading and re-reading Khoi's recent post about how we value objects that deteriorate in a cool way. Khoi is far more eloquent than I can be, so just go there and read it: Subtraction: Designed DeteriorationUnused objects are ignorant; only the ones that have been put to use, that...

    • Silent Shout: An Audio Visual Experience
I’ve been listening to a few CDs on repeat a lot, these past few months – my chief obsession being The Knife’s two LPs, the earlier Deep Cuts, and last year’s Silent Shout. I’m not a big techno fan, but I am a confessed svensk-phile. I’m excited to hear from Pitchfork that The Knife are getting ready to release a deluxe edition of Silent Shout, “featuring a live disc and a DVD in addition to the original synth-rattled masterpiece.” I’m totally looking forward to the DVD [Pre-order with Amazon] – my favorite track “Heartbeats” was re-worked awesomely. Here’s a preview:...

    • SXSW: Day 1
4 restless hours of sleep, and 1 Jetblue direct flight from BOS to AUS, and I found myself in Austin. Checked into the hotel and met up with the EchoDitto folks, and other friends. There are like 4 Jasons, 2 Justins, a John (me) — so it gets confusing. 70 degrees here, 55 or so at night. This festival totally takes over the city. Met some cool people last night, and the first panel this morning was cool — i started in “why XSLT is sexy”, but bailed for “emerging social and technology trends”. Next up, “How to Bluff Your...

    • Sabres as Oasis?
We're heading home to Buffalo for the holiday, (and my 10-year High School reunion), which reminds me of how well the Sabres are playing. ESPN's John Buccigross compares the Sabres to the britpop Oasis of all things: At full strength, the Buffalo Sabres are unequivocally the best team in the NHL. Not only do they have the full complement of parts, but Buffalo has that confidence that Oasis had when they went head-to-head with Blur back in 1995 in a Britpop mano a mano, or more accurately called boyo-a-boyo. Noel Gallagher said he and Oasis' soul was more pure than...

Man, I’ve taken a long break from this site… a belated welcome back to all the college kids — I almost forgot about all of you. And since it’s the new school year, it’s also time for BU Central to start up. They host bands, comedians and other fun stuff that we never had during our years there. • The Good, The Bad And The Queen
photo by NME The Official Blur mailing list announced today that Damon Albarn’s new project The Good, The Bad And The Queen, will perform their first gig at a BBC festival in October. TGTBTQ is a collaboration between Albarn (Blur & Gorillaz), bassist Paul Simonon of The Clash, and guitarist Simon Tong of The Verve. Damon is already setting expectations high, according to the BBC: It was “a story” rather than a band, said Albarn, adding he was “very, very proud” of the work, which will be performed on 26 October at the Roundhouse. “It’s a very English record....
    • Security
Windows is driving me insane at work — all of these little security fixes that get in the way of productivity. Last Friday, I installed the latest Windows updates and rebooted at the end of the day. When I get to work and log in on Monday morning, I get this security warning every time I click on a zip file: Internet Explorer This page has an unspecified potential security risk. Would you like to continue? Um, yes, permanently. It only repros (so far) for ZIPs on network shares and mapped drives. I’ve got Win XP SP2 & IE7… any...
    • The Beatings
I went to see Reverse play at Bill’s Bar Friday night, and got to catch The Beatings for the first time. They’re a four-piece indie-rock act from Boston that’s been around for a couple of years, and they reminded me a lot of Hsker D and the last Pixies album, Trompe le Monde. It’s a pretty raw sound, but always melodic and direct. And I liked that the two guitarists and bassist each took turns at the mic — (no doubt they also share in song writing).  Myspace : take a listen to some tracks eMusic : download albums...

    • New Brain Bucket
I decided to splurge a little on myself this weekend, and buy a new helmet for scootin’ — a Shoei RF-1000 in matte-black. My original helmet was a Korean HJC CL Max, with a flip-up chin bar — but it never quite fit me right, and it looked mildly retarded, all shiny and bubbly. Shoei’s designs are much more streamlined and fitted. I love the matte black — first my RAZR, next this helmet… the only thing left for me to buy is a Darth Book. photos: 1 | 2...

      IMG_2306, by droush16. • (Un)Happy Planet Index
The Happy Planet Index is a fascinating examination of countries’ economic and ecological footprints. Like much of social science, I’m not convinced that it shows anything concretely useful at all, but it does satiate my need for rank-order and self-examination. Here is how they designed the study: The Index doesnt reveal the happiest country in the world. It shows the relative efficiency with which nations convert the planets natural resources into long and happy lives for their citizens. The nations that top the Index arent the happiest places in the world, but the nations that score well show that achieving,...

    • Scooting in the Times
Presley sent me an article in the Sunday New York Times about scooting: Cheap, Chic and Sociable: The Buzz About Scooters. I give the journalist a lot of cred for accurately capturing the community, (at least in nyc). I especially found this passage funny: Scooter owners will tell you that drivers on four wheels are clumsy and often disrespectful. “They park by feel in New York City,” said Peter Lutjen, a book cover designer. “They back up until they bump into something, and if they bump into a scooter, it’s going down. We went to The Plan at Great Scott on Saturday night to see the Brooklyn band Asobi Seksu - I got some good shots of them and two of the opening bands. • Let's Go Sabres
It’s playoff time for the NHL, (though you’d never know it here in Boston), and I am loving what I see in my Buffalo Sabres. They’re up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series with the Flyers, after a brilliant double-overtime win Saturday, and an 8-2 rout last night. Best moment thus far was Buffalo’s Brian Campbell’s clean hit of Philly’s RJ Umberger, in game 1: I do feel bad for the guy, and I’m not cheering for injury. But that is just great playoff hockey, and a big reason why Buffalo is up 2 games to none. And, Philly seems to...

The New York Times launched a modest redesign over the weekend, and it does a great job of presenting large amounts of information in a coherent, organized way. • Back-Bay Apple Store, Part II
Some details are finally starting to emerge surrounding Apple’s plans for the construction of a signature Flagship retail store in the Back Bay, Boston. IfoAppleStore reports that renderings of the proposed design have leaked (see left), and that the backward-looking Back Bay Architectural Commission has serious misgivings about the 3-story modern glass structure. • Resolution
Happy New Year, everybody! I’m back at work today, after a (I think) deserved rest. New Year’s Eve was a bit more restrained than years past, but it was a nice cap to a great year. My only real resolution is for us to finally cut the cord on Boston, and move to NYC. Presley finishes Grad school in September, and I need to think more seriously about my career, grad school, and the future in general. A lot of things could happen, but that remains my #1 goal for 2006. What’s yours?...

    • Courtney Love does the math
I don’t know how I missed this, but Courtney Love gave an incredible speech at a May 2000 conference, on the music business, copyright law, and the real music pirates - the Majors. Salon has the unedited transcript, but I recommend reading it on Dave Ray’s site. My favorite excerpt: Somewhere along the way, record companies figured out that it’s a lot more profitable to control the distribution system than it is to nurture artists. And since the companies didn’t have any real competition, artists had no other place to go. Record companies controlled the promotion and marketing; only they...
    • On Turning 28
On this day, in 1977, I was born. At 5 lbs. 6 oz., I was six weeks early, and spent my first Christmas in hospital. I used to think that 28 sounded so old - time for marrying, house-buying, and thinking about kiddos. Now that this day has come, those things seem as far away as they did when I was 20. I’m always amazed that people I know are doing these things now… my younger cousing Maggie has 3 kids, and she’s 2 years younger than me. My first real girlfriend from High School is married. And, it seems...

Matt and Sharon even brought along a bottle of 1995 vintage Dom Perignon champaigne. • AT&T Wireless -> Cingular -> AT&T?
So, having been forcibly converted from AT&T Wireless to Cingular, I read this today: Well, you can say goodbye to Cingular. SBC, which closed its merger with AT&T last week, decided that after spending untold millions promoting the Cingular brand for its joint venture with BellSouth, that theyre going to drop the name and start selling wireless service under the AT&T brand name. Why? On the day we read about GM shedding 30,000 American jobs, I’m having a hard time understanding just what the hell U.S. Big-Business is up to. • The Kennedy Kerry Klan?
Political discourse is in such a sad state, these days. People on the Right viciously brand Democrats and Liberals (capital “L”) with ridiculous comparisons, while simultaneously charging us with doing the same to them. And they get away with it. Here’s the latest example, involving Governor (and likely 2008 GOP Presidential candidate) Romney of Massachusetts, who was introduced by attorney Gerald Walpin at a Federalist Society event: “Today when most of the country thinks of who controls Massachusetts, I think the modern day KKK comes to mind - the Kennedy, Kerry Klan.” Romney laughed along with the audience, The Boston...

After decades of production, the company moved on, but the city and community stepped in and converted the building and grounds to affordable housing: The Squirrel Brand building had to be gutted. Thanks to Mint, I noticed that a few visitors were referred here looking for the text of a New Yorker article writted in February 2004 titled, Underground Man: Can the former C.I.A. agent who saved New Yorks subway get the Tube back on track?. I had scanned the text a while back, but my directory security settings on my server were tightened, and the scans were no longer available. So, if you’re looking for the article, it’s is now properly linked in the orginal post. I still wish I had a way of extracting the text via OCR…...

    • 301 (Permanent redirect)
I’ve taken a second step toward fixing my Google indexing problem. On the advice of Casey, I modified my .htaccess file to rewrite all ned.suckahs.org URLs to nedward.org and send out 301s (Permanent redirects). Now, when a user arrives here via a ned.suckahs.org URL, they’ll be transparently redirected to nedward.org and Google will see the 301 message. Hopefully then, Google will get with the program. Thanks Casey!...
    • Scooterist killed in Boston
I am shocked and horrified by a report in the Globe today, that a Scooterist was killed last night in a collision with a truck: Police were searching last night for the driver of a tractor trailer suspected of striking, dragging, and killing an 18-year-old man riding a motor scooter at the Massachusetts Avenue onramp to the Massachusetts Turnpike. After the impact, the truck continued down the ramp, taking the scooter and its rider with it, police said. Both were found at the bottom of the ramp, which was closed for several hours after the accident, police said. Even more...

    • Walkman
Not to be outdone by Apple yesterday, I saw that Sony is once again rethinking it’s Walkman brand. I admit that the design is far more compelling than Sony’s previous offerings, but a monocramatic, low-res screen? C’mon Sony!...

    • iPod nano & ROKR phone
Wow — we all expected the new iTunes phone, but who would have guessed at the iPod nano? First, the ROKR is available from Cingular now. It’s got iTunes (100 songs), Bluetooth, and a VGA camera (sucky) — for $249.00. But, I’m more intrigued with the iPod nano… Sure, it only comes with a max of 4GB storage, but the small size, color screen, and “wow” factor is going to make it a big hit. And, the price is right at just $249 for the 4GB, (the same as the now dead, iPod mini). Start saving your money… even the...

    • BU Today
My alma mater just launched a nicely-designed portal called BU Today, which publishes (official) daily news from the university. It’s as if this school finally “get’s it” — that Public Relations matter. I’m disappointed to see that the code is full of Dreamweaver javascript, spacer GIFs, and <table>-based structure. And, the weather widget at the top is flash-based. Oh well....

    • NPR + Podcasts, Part II
A follow up on my NPR + Podcasts post, it seems that NPR is indeed investing in podcasting of its programs. They’ve launched a Podcast Directory, but it is interesting to note that they are not yet providing full-length programs: This service is our first step in podcasting and we are experimenting with a number of program formats… Podcasting full-length programs such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered could be extremely expensive. Over the next several months, NPR and its public radio partners will be experimenting with a number of formats and offerings, and we invite your feedback. And,...
