The Reagan we aren't seeing on TV
I suspect much of this country feels, as I do, that Ronald Reagan was not the saint that the radical Right would like us to believe. Still, the media coverage this past week has not only been "gushingly positive":http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20802-2004Jun6.html, but also "all-consuming":http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/22590.htm.
While watching that carriage parade around for 4 hours last night, and suffering through Dick Cheney's political eulogy, I kept thinking of the horrible things this guy was responsible for -- and many of them meet my definition of "High Crimes and Misdemeanors":http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0764613.html.
* He sent Rumsfeld to "shake hands":http://www.impeach-bush-now.org/Articles/Rumsfeld/shakinghands.htm with Saddam Hussein on an "arms deal":http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,866942,00.html.
* He gave Saddam "weaponized biological agents":http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2002-09-30-iraq-ushelp_x.htm, for use in the war against Iran.
* He "gave Iran weapons":http://www.webcom.com/pinknoiz/covert/icsummary.html, laundered money through Saudi banks, and funneled the money to the death squads in central America, after Congress specifically passed a bill forbidding any help to the Contras.
* He sold cocaine (see the "report":http://www.webcom.com/pinknoiz/covert/contracoke.html prepared by a certain "Sen. John F. Kerry":http://www.johnkerry.com/ in the early 90s), to fund the death squads in central America. 500,000 people died in "these wars":http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29546-2004Jun9.html.
* He "pulled us out of Beirut":http://www.travelbrochuregraphics.com/extra/take_the_fight_to_the_terrorists.htm. And then, invaded Grenada like the next day, so he didn't look like a total wuss. Islamic extremists cheered, and no one could figure out what the hell Granada did to warrant invasion. Bait and switch.
* He "trained Osama":http://www.reuters.ch/newsArticle.jhtml?type=reutersEdge&storyID=5376096 on how to beat a superpower in Afghanistan.
* He created the "homeless":http://eightiesclub.tripod.com/id343.htm problem, and said that people "choose" to be homeless.
* He "refused to cut off business and diplomatic contact":http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2004/06/09/reagans_heart_of_darkness/ with apartheid-era South Africa.
And yet, no articles of impeachment in eight years... don't get me started on what they did to "Clinton":http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375414576/suckahs-20/.
