- Free IKEA Sofa in Cambridge
Hi - one big piece of furniture left before our move Wednesday. It's an IKEA sofa/couch: There is some cat damage: ...but it would clean up nice with a slipcover from IKEA. Free, but we need you to get it outta' here by Wednesday, preferably earlier. Let me know! nedward AT gmail DOT com... - Moving Sale
Lisa and I are packing up our Cambridge apartment in advance of our move to Brooklyn in early August. As such, we are getting rid of a lot of stuff - most of the big stuff is IKEA related. We're going to be doing the yard sale thing tomorrow morning, and maybe sunday as well. For more info, map, etc. check these out: Craigslist Ad, with photos Flickr Photoset... - Lad Lit in Song
I always knew there was something wrong with Nick Hornby… now I have proof.... - BU Central
Man, I’ve taken a long break from this site… a belated welcome back to all the college kids — I almost forgot about all of you. And since it’s the new school year, it’s also time for BU Central to start up. They host bands, comedians and other fun stuff that we never had during our years there. Rainer Maria It makes me laugh when they pop up on Sirius Left of Center, as “up-and-coming!!!”. Beirut I really don’t get what the buzz is about, but, I have to respect their live act. I’ve never seen a room of kids... - The Beatings
I went to see Reverse play at Bill’s Bar Friday night, and got to catch The Beatings for the first time. They’re a four-piece indie-rock act from Boston that’s been around for a couple of years, and they reminded me a lot of Hsker D and the last Pixies album, Trompe le Monde. It’s a pretty raw sound, but always melodic and direct. And I liked that the two guitarists and bassist each took turns at the mic — (no doubt they also share in song writing). Myspace : take a listen to some tracks eMusic : download albums... - ICA Boston
IMG_2306, by droush16. It looks like the new ICA on the South Boston waterfront has to delay it's September opening: In interviews yesterday, ICA officials, architect Ricardo Scofidio, and construction company manager John Macomber said that the remaining work was not major. Among the pending tasks -- termed minutiae by one ICA trustee -- was the need to test the building's ticket counter and climate control system. [via]... - Weekly Dig Redesign
I look forward to picking up the new Dig every Wednesday morning while I’m in line for coffee at Herrell’s. It’s the only readable “alt” weekly I’ve ever come across - anywhere. And finally, the Dig has a new website to match their print offering. There is a daily blog, my favorite column Media Farm, a round-up of local events in the right column. Also, you may subscribe via a variety of RSS feeds.... - Hockey East Champs
My alma mater Boston University clinched the Hockey East Championship this past Saturday, winning in 2-1 OT against Boston College. Now, they’re off to the NCAA tournament, ranked #1 in the nation. They haven’t done that since 1997, when I was a sophomore, and had nothing better to do on Friday nights than go watch the games. And, if that wasn’t enough, a guy who played on that 1997 team, Chris Drury, is captaining my hometown Buffalo Sabres this season. They’re near the top of the conference standings, and one of the most exciting young teams to watch. We’ve... - Back-Bay Apple Store, Part II
Some details are finally starting to emerge surrounding Apple’s plans for the construction of a signature Flagship retail store in the Back Bay, Boston. IfoAppleStore reports that renderings of the proposed design have leaked (see left), and that the backward-looking Back Bay Architectural Commission has serious misgivings about the 3-story modern glass structure. This is a shame… our wonderfully acerbic alternative newspaper, The Weekly Dig, said it better than I can: Putting aside the mental gymnastics it takes to believe that one glass building would destroy the neighborhoody feeling of a three-lane boulevard that hosts a mall, a convention... - Spring?
It’s a nice day out!... - Snow Infographics
Aw crap… there goes our weekend in NYC.... - Apple to Build 4-story Store in the Back Bay?
Bostonist links to rumors that Apple will finally open a flagship store in the heart of Boston. Looprumors reports: Apple is poised to announce a major retail store directly across from the Prudential Center on Boylston Street in Downtown Boston. The store is said to be Apple’s most state-of-the-art store to date with 4 stories and a front made entirely of a glass. Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino is expected to announce plans for the store in the coming week. They couldn’t have picked a better spot. photo is of the new San Francisco store, uploaded to Flickr by iPhil... - Jenna's Visit

Pay attention, you Boston-area foodies! Todd is starting up Eat and Destroy, a Boston area food/restaurant blog. I can’t wait to try a Mongolian Fire Pot.... - Saturday walk
Wow, another weekend with great weather. Like last week, I took another walk around the neighborhood, and snapped some photos: One of the more architecturally interesting buildings to go up in recent years, is the luxury condos at 23 Sydney. They’re really lovely, but likely inhabited by wealthy Aholes. More photos here. This is the famed Good News Garage, operated by Ray Magliozzi of Car Talk fame. A while back I mentioned that they were tearing up and re-paving Brookline Ave, near our house… well, we noticed something cool — they’re going to narrow the road by about half,... - WBUR Podcasts
Ask, and ye shall receive. NPR powerhouse WBUR has started offering it’s programming in Podcast packaging. Now, you can download and listen to On Point and Here and Now, on your iPod. There are some limitations, however… due to the music licensing cabal, they can’t offer content that contains music licensed for broadcast only - apparently ASCAP and BMI think that people will rip songs out of MP3 Podcasts, and share it with their friends. Not only is this ridiculous on its face, but it also blindly ignores the inherent promotional potential afforded by Podcasting. So, they have to... - Election Day
Local It’s Election Day, and I haven’t done much research on the City Council race here in Cambridge. The Globe has a special election section for Boston, but I can’t find much information on Our Fair City. I hate to cast votes blindly, but what can I do at this point? Go by the signs in my neighbors’ yards? By how much political mail I’ve received? (Jesse Gordon wins on that count) Or, perhaps I’ll just take the advice of drunkards. National The national media seems to be writing an awful lot into the Virginia governor’s race. Due to a... - Squirrel Brand
We discovered an interesting urban story on a walk we took this past weekend, down Columbia Street in Cambridge [map]… the famous Squirrel Brand candy and nut company factory, made famous by 90’s swing-revivalists Squirrel Nut Zippers, (don’t let that turn you off). After decades of production, the company moved on, but the city and community stepped in and converted the building and grounds to affordable housing: The Squirrel Brand building had to be gutted. Its 132 6-by-8-foot windows, 12.5-foot ceilings, and wood floors had been saturated by more than eight decades of molasses steam. Just-A-Start officials estimate a... - First Snow
It’s been snowing, today. The first hour or so, a few flakes fell, and it was cute. But then, the temperature dropped 8 degrees, and it started to accumulate on the ground. Flurries! On October 29! Enough to make you cry… Last year, the first snowfall was in mid-November, and in early December in 2003…... - Statistics
The Boston Foundation has just put out a Greater Boston Housing Report Card [PDF], and drew some ridiculous conclusions. John A Keith of the Boston Real Estate Blog explains [via]: From the report: Fenway/Kenmore neighborhood 2004 estimated renter income: $24,132 2004 estimated monthly rent: $1,498 % of median income needed to pay rent in 2004: 74% No. Why not? 1) earlier in their report, the authors estimate rents on two-bedroom apartments throughout the city. They estimate a two-bedroom apartment in the Fenway would cost $1,498 per month. A two-bedroom apartment. Would one person, making $24,132, rent a two-bedroom apartment? Why... - BU Today
My alma mater just launched a nicely-designed portal called BU Today, which publishes (official) daily news from the university. It’s as if this school finally “get’s it” — that Public Relations matter. I’m disappointed to see that the code is full of Dreamweaver javascript, spacer GIFs, and <table>-based structure. And, the weather widget at the top is flash-based. Oh well.... - Trolley
Apparently there is an interesting story behind the wide intersection near our house in Cambridge… all week, a construction crew has been tearing up the asphalt, in order to re-pave. And, they found train tracks underneath the street. Train tracks, imagine that! A neighbor told us that a trolley line used to run down Brookline Ave, and our intersection was a “turn-around”, where cars could change direction. I’d love to find some historical photos, especially considering our house is right on the corner. Brookline Ave. Paving set on Flickr... - Boston Scooter Rally
It starts tonight — the Boston city rally. Watch out if you’re walking or driving around the city in the next few days… especially in the Fenway, which is ground zero… But, it kicks off tonight in Allston, at O’Briens — the amazing Jam tribute band, All Mod Cons are playing. See you there.... - Pressed Sandwiches
Pressed Central Square 736 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139 [map] Rarely am I motivated enough to post about food… after all, it’s something I do every day (that is, eat). But, there is a newish eatery in Central Square called Pressed, which I’ve lunched at a couple of times now, and I felt compelled to offer some observations. Pressed is the kind of sandwich shop that puts all the emphasis on detail… the interior is decorated very modern, with an earthy green glow, black chalkboards with the offerings, and nice light treatments. One odd thing that I noticed is that... - Meteor Showers this Weekend
Stef passed on this information about meteor showers this weekend: The 12 th and 13th of August is the best time that you can see meteor shower this year. They are called Perseids, and you can expect to see at least 60 meteors per hour. According to NASA, the best time to see the Perseids this year is “between 2 a.m. and dawn on August 12th, if you get away from city lights, you could see hundreds of meteors. This is a good time to go camping!” NASA Feature NASA Press Release... - Xmas in February
I posted some photos from this past weekend... Kim was kind enough to invite us to a Xmas in February party. The food was terrific, and the Yankee Swap fun, (though it feels weird in February). We participated in the "12 Bars of Christmas Charity Pub Crawl":http://www.evite.com/pages/invite/viewInvite.jsp?inviteId=ORNJGHQCSFAMFFPWPTQX in Boston last night, with donations going to the "New England Center for Children":http://necc.org/ and the "Boston Medical Children with AIDS Program":http://www.bmc.org/pediatrics/special/CAP/overview.html. I feel a bit guilty claiming this was for charity, since all we did was drink heavily, over and 8-hour day, in a pack of Santa-hat wearing revelers... but, we did had a lot of fun with "Jason":http://bloodymortyvane.typepad.com/, "Kim":http://starstreamgirl.blogspot.com/, "Casey":http://www.nerdle.com/blog, "Jess":http://www.frecklegirl.com/blog/, and the rest of the pack. I just want to point out that I am not _always_ the drunkard in the family... "Ocasionally":http://bloodymortyvane.typepad.com/bossanova/2004/08/ha.html, the lady of the house tips a few too many back. Thanks to J., who is "documenting":http://bloodymortyvane.typepad.com/bossanova/2004/08/nice.html all of this: bq. Okay, so I think I need to add that I didn't actually throw up, because I can handle my booze. but I was thinking about it because I guess "someone":http://presley.suckahs.org/ did actually get sick after leaving my house the other day. This is probably more the exception than the rule, but oh well. We're young.... - Old Times...
Presley and I were invited out last night with my old boss, who is visiting Boston on holiday from his teaching gig in Japan. It was the usual shitty service at the Enormous Room, and then across the street for a little rock n' roll Upstairs, courtesy A.M. Stereo and The Glow. A.M. Stereo was fun, Indie post-punk -- each member singing in turn, (except the drummer, who looked like something out of Spinal Tap). The Glow was a tighter, keyboard-driven, cross-over ska outfit, which I really enjoyed -- their guitarist reminded me of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse... decide... - DNC Commute
My commute last night back to Boston was uneventful, (which "seems":http://yovanoff.typepad.com/yovablog/2004/07/convention_comm.html to be the "consensus":http://www.utterwonder.com/archives/000579.html#000579). I think half our population was scared away by the "DNC":http://www.boston04.com. Helicopters are buzzing around our house, and since we live "near the Charles river":http://www.cambridgema.gov/dnc/, we've noticed Coast Guard and Police boats patrolling the river in formation... a strange sight, given that on any given day you'd usually see small sailboats and rowing crews. Boston is locked-down, but I feel safe. I think it's unreasonable to expect that an event this size will ever be held again without tight security. Though I understand concerns about... - Boston Stranglers Rally
The "Boston Stranglers' Scooter Rally":http://www.bostonstranglers.com/rally2004/ was 2 weeks ago, and neglectful as always, I never posted "my pics":http://scoot.net/gallery/2004/06/bssanc/nedward/. One highlight of the weekend was getting an escorted ride for 50+ scooters along the Charles River Esplanade, and then continued on along the "Emerald Necklace":http://www.emeraldnecklace.org to the "Larz Anderson":http://www.mot.org park, overlooking the city. Presley and I were joined by "Sam":http://scoot.net/gallery/pic.html?pic=86053 and her cute "Metro":http://powersports.honda.com/scooters/model.asp?ModelName=Metropolitan&ModelYear=2004&ModelId=CHF504, and we met a lot of new people. And, I avoided the combination of drinking and riding my "Vespa":http://scoot.net/gallery/pic.html?pic=86049.... - Snow Expected Tonight?
I almost choked on my pretzel when I saw this weather report on Boston.com: Accumulating snow is predicted for much of western and central Massachusetts late this afternoon and tonight and forecasters say there could be snow showers early tomorrow in the Greater Boston area. It's October 22nd, people!... - Almost Choke
My parents are in town visiting, and I thought it would be fun to go to a Red Sox game... Never-mind that it's late-august, during a pennant and wild-card race, in the craziest baseball city with the smallest stadium in mlb. After trying in vain to find 4 tickets together for this weekend on craigslist, I ponied up and started calling brokers. These guys must make a killing-- that's all I'll say. We ended up 10 rows up from Pesky's poll, way the hell out in right field. Still, the rain held after a violent thunderstorm, and we got to... - And now...
It's fucking snowing!... - The Big Dig
Presley, Tbone, Megger, Chris and I just got back from the Midwest Grill in Inman Square, where we celebrated Presley's 23rd birthday. She really is getting quite old. But, on the way home, we convinced Chris to drive down to South Boston, so we could come up the new I-93 N tunnel-- that's right, the Big Dig is open. Well, partially open. The tunnel is wide and bright, with actual signage that gives you some actual notice about your exit before you drive by it. But the real treat was emerging from the tunnel, and driving onto the Zakim Bridge.... - Nine-Eleven ~ 9/11
So, here I am, at the library, trying to update my little web site with some new content... Today is 9/11, and I walked down to Cambridge City Hall at 8:45 am for the ceremony honoring the victims. My first reaction was to wonder just when the police were going to shut Mass Ave down to traffic-- surely any fitting memorial would re-route traffic for such an occasion. The crowds were pretty sparse though, so I surmised that the police didn't deem it necessary. Probably only 50-75 people were in attendance, while maybe a hundred firemen, policemen, politicians and other... - More Primitive Times
Hi. I am writing you from inside the walls of the Cambridge Public Library, Central Square Branch. The past few weeks have upturned a lot of dirt... and by that i mean that i have: a) moved from Boston to Cambridge b) Still have no working DSL c) have 30 boxes satacked everywhere, each one having been half-emptied d) have paint stripper on our window sills, waiting to be scraped off... which means, e) we are painting our living room soon f) our building Super is super, if not a bit wierd g) the librarian here has been very nice,... - From WBUR Boston...
Be forwarned, the flash file is 6 MB! Big Dig: Underground Tour Bob Oakes, Sean Cole BOSTON, MA (2002-06-20) The Big Dig is dug. The I-93 Central Artery tunnel that makes up the bulk of the largest public works project in history has reached the point at which you can now drive through it northbound without stopping. However, there's one catch: you can't use a car. The vent system isn't done yet. So the tunnel can't support vehicles that emit exhaust. The solution? Earlier this week, WBUR's Morning Edition rode underground from Kneeland Street to the Zakim Bridge at... - The Bilingual Hoax
I know that people might find this objectionable, but if said people just took a step back, I think they'd see it's very good news... > City's bilingual policy repealed... - Fear and Loathing in the New Economy
I've been feeling horribly anxious today... Trying to find an affordable apartment in Cambridge for September without a job is not something I'd recommend to the squeamish. We found a jewel of a place at 922 Mass Ave. It has hardwoods, a small kitchen, large eating room, a smaller bedroom (who cares), and a large living room. It's on the 4th Floor, (no elevator, which sucks), and it faces Mass ave.... $1100 a month. That's nothing in that neighborhood between Harvard and Central Squares. One tiny problem: they don't take students, and they want us to earn a combined salary... - Unpopular Policy
There is a debate on educational policy raging on suckahs (see comments). I know people are going to dismiss what I am saying, because what I am saying makes them uncomfortable, or is seemingly contrary to their own life-experience, or values. All I can say is, detach yourself and remove what you think you know-- and just listen to what I am saying. I should mention my professor at BU, Christine Rossell, because she is responsible for convincing me to look at the evidence. Her class and writings redefined the way I see the invective debate surrounding MCAS and Educational... - This has promise to cause

BU won. Such a great game-- Northeastern has quite a good team this year. Funnily, with 1:18 left in the game, the score tied, the projector suddenly switches channel to the Cartoon Network, and Scooby Doo. About 500 students started to holler and scream, and when some staff member ran to the booth to switch it back, BU had scored! What fucking timing! (More evidence that BU is satan.) just kidding. BU won 5-3 (with an empty-netter).... - 50th Beanpot
Going to a Beanpot watching party at BU. Should be interesting. BC won't be in it though (cos BU beat them last week), but i'm sure there will be "BC sucks" chants anyway.... - Pats Win
I haven't cared about football in this city since... well, the last time the patriots went to the Superbowl. But tonight was so terrific, it almost erased the 4 consecutive Bills loses in the early-90s. The streets in Allston were ablaze: [View Pictures]... - Malls?
So i ended up in the South Shore Plaza (SSP) today, which makes no sense, because i live in boston and we have more than our share of crappy shopping opportunities. So, i bought a new skagen watch and a gap corduroy jacket.... - The Flickerstick show was
The Flickerstick show was incredible. They projected motion graphics type stuff from the back onto stage, and had cuts from movies like 'Willy Wonka' playing in between songs.
