  • “Designed Deterioration”, and the return of Links
Now that I have 2 days left at my current job, and a big move to NYC coming, I'm going to attempt to post more often. A new design for the weblog is also in the works, but not sure when I'll get to it. In that spirit, I found myself reading and re-reading Khoi's recent post about how we value objects that deteriorate in a cool way. Khoi is far more eloquent than I can be, so just go there and read it: Subtraction: Designed DeteriorationUnused objects are ignorant; only the ones that have been put to use, that...
  • SXSW: Day 1
4 restless hours of sleep, and 1 Jetblue direct flight from BOS to AUS, and I found myself in Austin. Checked into the hotel and met up with the EchoDitto folks, and other friends. There are like 4 Jasons, 2 Justins, a John (me) — so it gets confusing. 70 degrees here, 55 or so at night. This festival totally takes over the city. Met some cool people last night, and the first panel this morning was cool — i started in “why XSLT is sexy”, but bailed for “emerging social and technology trends”. Next up, “How to Bluff Your...
  • SXSW '07
Things have been so hectic with work lately, there’s been no time to update. I’ll be attending the SXSW Interactive Festival this year in Austin, TX. I just couldn’t let another year go by. I’m crashing with Jason and the EchoDitto crew at the Hyatt — can’t wait to meet everybody....

  • ICA Boston
IMG_2306, by droush16. It looks like the new ICA on the South Boston waterfront has to delay it's September opening: In interviews yesterday, ICA officials, architect Ricardo Scofidio, and construction company manager John Macomber said that the remaining work was not major. Among the pending tasks -- termed minutiae by one ICA trustee -- was the need to test the building's ticket counter and climate control system. [via]...
  • The New NYTimes.com
The New York Times launched a modest redesign over the weekend, and it does a great job of presenting large amounts of information in a coherent, organized way. Khoi has the details on his weblog: I think its a sterling piece of work, a great example of how to evolve a user experience rather than reinvent it: the best reaction it could receive from readers (those not among that vanishingly small subset of the general populace who can be called design savvy) would be something along the lines of The new design looks just like the old design. That...
  • Beer Logos in Vector Format
I love this site, which offers tons of beer logos for download, in EPS format [via]. For some reason, this amuses me. What didn’t amuse me, was the 20 minutes of frustration last night, trying to get a freakin’ Boddingtons at The Burren in Davis Square. I had to order twice, from the same woman, (as she must’ve forgot the first one)… and finally I grabbed a second bartender to go check on things. And, HE was the one who brought me my freakin’ beer. I realize that a lot of bartenders double-pour Boddy’s, (much like Guinness), but you’re...

  • 24 Ways
24 Ways is a kind of advent calendar for markup geeks. I’m now in the process of redesigning (as oposed to realigning) my portfolio site, and it’s been fun tuning in to these little tutorials. My favorites include: An Explanation of Ems I love using ems Introduction to Scriptaculous Effects for a little javascript splash Putting the World into World Wide Web I work in localization, so I enjoy this kind of thing....

Having read Greg Storey’s post about IconBuffet’s Free Delivery, I signed up and received my first delivery: Oslo Finance. Anybody want to trade? Taipei Night Market looks pretty cool. UPDATE: I now have Oslo Atmosphere, Taipei Night Market, and Taipei Buddies 2… and, will gladly trade!...

  • Site Header updates
Down with Flash! Say goodbye to SlideShowPro… I’ve decided to use Nick Chapman’s Random Images javascript class to pull the most recent photos from my Flickr Photostream. However, the Flickr RSS feed doesn’t provide the original-sized photos, so I’ve got some tiling action happening above… anyone got ideas how to make a Flickr RSS Feed, with the original-sized Photos?...

  • Redesign followup
Thanks again to everyone who has written me about the reboot. I’m still getting used to seeing my site looking like this. And, yes, I’m still working out a few kinks. I did receive my Flickr API key, so hopefully I’ll find some time this weekend to get my site header photos plugged-in. Nick Chapman posted his javascript solution that I mentioned in my previous post… and it looks very cool. I can’t wait to try it out....
  • Redesign... version 4
Somehow, some way, after more than eight months tooling around in Photoshop, I managed to give this site a major design refresh. The motivation was the May 1 Reboot, but I’ve been trying to get this done for quite some time. First, my objective was not to totally re-brand myself and my site. I like how this site’s structure and style have evolved over the past 2+ years, and I love the green & orange. So, job #1 was continuity. Keeping this in mind, there was a lot of room to improve… Logo I switched to a Macintosh almost 2...

“Peepers”, posted by nedward I was browsing around the Gorillaz site today, kind of looking forward to the new record, and I stumbled across a link to a Birmingham UK art collective, Beat13. • Facelift
It was a long time coming, but I gave this weblog yet another design tweak, converting the horrid _image map_ navigation to _CSS-styled unordered lists_. This design has served me well for the past 2+ years... a major re-design has been in planning for more than a year, but I almost enjoy tweaking this one more. There is value in _constancy_. The real motive for doing this, is that my category choices for posts have been limited to the same 5: "books":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/cat_books.php, "music":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/cat_music.php, "movies":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/cat_movies.php, "features":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/cat_features.php, and "posts":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/cat_posts.php... I couldn't add new categories, because the image navigation, and complex scripting behind...
  • Terminal blog
I stumbled upon an interesting blog design in my "referrals":http://ned.suckahs.org/refer/ -- "klypso.com":http://klypso.com/. Paul used "Terminal" for his blog's typeface. It's quick-loading, lean-and-mean, but Paul chose to forgo the "CSS trend":http://www.zeldman.com/, and build it with old-fashioned _Tables_. As soon as I saw it, I had a flashback to college and X-Windows, "Lynx":http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnedward.org, Emacs... And then back to high school and 9600-baud connections to BBSs. We've come a long way, no?...
  • Verizon's UI, Part II
An update on my Verizon annoyances-- After a few weeks of assurances and passing the buck, I've been told that we won't be able to get DSL for our new house. No discernible reason was given, just a "no". So, to put my money where my mouth was, I decided to punish Verizon for this by switching our phone to Comcast. All this supposedly "good" deregulation in the communications industry still leaves those of us in Boston with little choice. Since we're already going to pay Comcast for cable tv & broadband internet access, why not be done with Verizon...
  • Web Standards
There's been a lot of talk around the web recently about designing better web sites: * Zeldman's book on web standards * Jason Kottke's post on Semantics, which i hadn't thought much about * Jeffrey Veen's article on the Business Value of Web Standards * Dan's excellent SimpleQuiz on preferred methods of writing markup I've just spent a good chunk of my saturday working on this very site. Though it may look as nearly identical to yesterday's _Nedward_, I've done some major overhauls "under the hood". * Firstly, I've made a huge effort to more accurately separate structure from content....

  • Libeskind PR Affront
Today, the a panel in NYC will decide on which of the 2 final designs will replace the World Trade Center. Libeskind has been everywhere, as Gawker points out... but it looks like the Think team will get the call. I'm glad, despite the tinkertoy latticework. Stay tuned... UPDATE: Aw Hell no. • Home (page) From Nowhere
Megnut points out that James Kunstler, author of many excellent amateur urban planning books, has a website that is just AWFUL. • Undesign?
This article on Lo-Fi web design, which includes an interview with Jason Kottke, is very interesting. Jason argues that information is more important to weblog writing (why I love RSS readers), than having glitzy, highly-graphical designs. Sites with 60k background images need not apply... I agree, begrudgenly... and I love trend reporting....
  • CSS annoyances
These past few days, I've been intensely working on a weblog site for a friend... using CSS. and it's frustrating. It's nearly impossible to do anything advanced layout-wise with CSS. There are always browser inconsistencies to deal with. So after screwing with that for days on end, I decided to revert to tables. That site will be ready soon. But, I had to do something affirming with CSS, so I updated this site. Not an ounce of <table> code at all. Email me bugs (especially on the macintosh / safari / mozilla side of things.)...

I just check my referrer logs for this Web site, and noticed that my site was one of the top referring sites for the Albright Knox Art Gallery's Modigliani exhibition (read about it here). · week one · week two · week three in the second week, I gave them 743 hits, beating out the amount they got from the Buffalo News, (65 hits). • Who is Modi?
The Albright Knox is beginning a new exhibition on the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, one of the painters at Montparnasse... His contemporaries there included Picasso and Diego Rivera. Interesting stuff. Check it out. Here is the text from the Exhibition: The Albright-Knox Art Gallery has organized this major exhibition, gathering masterworks from world-renowned museums and collections throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. Fifty-six of Modigliani's paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are featured, including important works from the Albright-Knox Art gallery's distinguished collection. The exhibition is accompanied by a scholarly 240-page catalogue illustrated with eighty-seven plates in full color...

  • It's Spring
I put up a new semi-temporary design at suckahs.org, for spring. It seemed silly to have snowflakes falling in April. When I get the chance, I want to sit down with a few people and come up with a master plan for suckahs in the coming months. I'd like to extend the site to include some writing -- be it reviews, commentary, articles, features, photo essays, comix, or whatever. I don't want to turn this into a zine, that requires an intense amount of work, however it would be nice to capture and share some of the talents the group...

  • The Next Suckahs Subdomain: Albany Dan
Shit dogg, so i spent some time tonight working on Albany Dan's site. Presley's new layout was relatively simple, once we got going with it. She had prepared a collage of stuff, so the idea was well-defined, before i even got into photoshop. Anyway, i'm tired as shit, so i can't stay on topic... Albany Dan's new layout. He & i had spent some time taking photos in his neighborhood, which i initially used as part of another deconstructed collage-style design. but, it didn't make sense because it lacked any sort of connection to Danno (aside from the shots of...
