- Blondes
Jenna bleached her hair, and I can tell she’s having more fun already. (and yes, this is just a shameless excuse to sex up the blog a bit…)... - Yea, New York
We had a nice weekend in NYC… thanks Jenna, Becca, Jason, Matt, & Sharon. Some observations: Saw Mill Parkway is still the best path into the City. I love driving by Readers Digest HQ. Bloody Marys are better when hand-made. I can’t recommend the food at 7A. Or the service. Don’t let your high school friends tackle you in the middle of Tompkins Square Park… your clothes will end up dirty. I could spend every day in the Lotus Lounge on Clinton St… Coffee, Beer, wi-fi. Starfoods has no other customers at 7:30pm on a saturday night… creepy. Jason... - Happy Valentine's day!
Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day - I hope you all enjoy it. I used fd’s Flickr Toys to create a heart with all of my Flickr contacts [via]. Now, all I need for tomorrow’s big day, is a Teddy Bear Holding a Heart… Available literally almost everywhere! UPDATE: Go ahead, and find yourself!... - Jenna's Visit
God, it’s good when Jenna visits… photo set.... - Birthdays
A couple of January birthdays help continue my trend of posting to Flickr only photos of my friends drinking… Stef’s 31st Birthday Nobuko’s 33rd Birthday... - Saturday walk
Wow, another weekend with great weather. Like last week, I took another walk around the neighborhood, and snapped some photos: One of the more architecturally interesting buildings to go up in recent years, is the luxury condos at 23 Sydney. They’re really lovely, but likely inhabited by wealthy Aholes. More photos here. This is the famed Good News Garage, operated by Ray Magliozzi of Car Talk fame. A while back I mentioned that they were tearing up and re-paving Brookline Ave, near our house… well, we noticed something cool — they’re going to narrow the road by about half,... - First Snow
It’s been snowing, today. The first hour or so, a few flakes fell, and it was cute. But then, the temperature dropped 8 degrees, and it started to accumulate on the ground. Flurries! On October 29! Enough to make you cry… Last year, the first snowfall was in mid-November, and in early December in 2003…... - Sphynx
Untitled, by hinagiku. Our friend Nobuko is cat-sitting in the South End this week — she isn’t sitting for normal kitties, mind you, but these Mr. Bigglesworth-esque hairless Sphynx cats. Check out her photos tagged with Sphynx, or some interesting public photos. UPDATE: Presley has some Sphynx shots from her cameraphone: New Friend, by Presley... - Flickr Adds Printing service
Nice announcement, long overdue: Order Prints from Flickr… you even get your first 10 4×6” prints free. On the rare occasion that I need an analog photograph, I do it from iPhoto. But, now I can print my friends’ and contacts’ photos, (so long as they allow me to). But wait, there is one other interesting nugget: You can order prints to be delivered by mail, or pick them up at your local Target store for one hour printing, even. One-hour Flickr Prints! Cool.... - Ironic Moustaches
I’ve spent the past few months, (off and on, usually with a glass of wine in my hand), trying to convince my girlfriend that I should grow an ironic moustache — and now, Kottke has gone and beat me to it. Game over. The jury is still out on whether that ‘stache is ironical or not, but I must say that it takes balls to walk around like that.... - Presley's New Specs
Somebody I know got three pairs of new eyeglasses today… Not fair.... - Stef in Norway
I noticed that Stef posted some photos of her European trip. I wonder if she’s back yet? Norwegian flag on Ulriken, by Mystera Preikestolen, just about at the top!, by Mystera... - Trolley
Apparently there is an interesting story behind the wide intersection near our house in Cambridge… all week, a construction crew has been tearing up the asphalt, in order to re-pave. And, they found train tracks underneath the street. Train tracks, imagine that! A neighbor told us that a trolley line used to run down Brookline Ave, and our intersection was a “turn-around”, where cars could change direction. I’d love to find some historical photos, especially considering our house is right on the corner. Brookline Ave. Paving set on Flickr... - Weekend
After 5 days off from the nine-to-five last week, I drove down to nyc to hang out with Jenna again. Photos will come soon, because they need to be developed… (Presley had my trusty Elph with her in Vegas for MacyMe’s Bachelorette weekend). Speaking of which, here’s Macyme: Sexpot, by presley.... - Beach
Marci was in town for a job interview at Harvard, so we took wednesday off from work, and headed for "the beach":http://www.google.com/maps?q=good+harbor+beach&ll=42.621885,-70.628587&spn=0.019260,0.031311&t=k&near=Gloucester,+MA&cid=42615833,-70662500,16941471628673446076&num=10&start=0&hl=en in Gloucester. So much less crowded on weekdays... Having just finished "Tipping Point":http://www.gladwell.com/tippingpoint/index.html, I dug into a couple hundred pages of Malcolm Gladwell's new book, "Blink":http://www.gladwell.com/blink/index.html... ...and, we enjoyed a big jug of homemade Sangria.... - Site Header Tweak, II
I took a few minutes today, to try and sort out my Flickr-integrated "site header issues":http://www.jnied.com/dev/nedward.org/v4/archives/002862.php... I found that by adding just two characters to "Nick Chapman's script":http://chapnickman.com/2005/05/02/random-images-with-javascript/, I can parse the original-sized images from Flickr. However, given that I upload my photos at full-quality, it wouldn't be too advisable having 2MB images embedded in my site. So, for now, I have to create these site-header images, and tag them as "siteheader":http://www.flickr.com/photos/nedward/tags/siteheader/. I also squashed a background CSS bug, which caused short pages to look a bit strange. Nice to have the time to finally sort these things out...... - Site Header updates
Down with Flash! Say goodbye to SlideShowPro… I’ve decided to use Nick Chapman’s Random Images javascript class to pull the most recent photos from my Flickr Photostream. However, the Flickr RSS feed doesn’t provide the original-sized photos, so I’ve got some tiling action happening above… anyone got ideas how to make a Flickr RSS Feed, with the original-sized Photos?... - 24 hours in nyc
"garden", posted by nedward I plunked down the $15 and rode the "Fung Wah":http://fungwahbus.com to nyc to visit the new "MoMA":http://moma.org, and visit some friends. It was nice to finally get inside the museum, having been thwarted by long lines on my past two visits. I enjoyed meandering around by myself, though the guided audio tour is pretty worthless. Thanks again to everyone who has written me about the reboot. I’m still getting used to seeing my site looking like this. And, yes, I’m still working out a few kinks. I did receive my Flickr API key, so hopefully I’ll find some time this weekend to get my site header photos plugged-in. Nick Chapman posted his javascript solution that I mentioned in my previous post… and it looks very cool. I can’t wait to try it out.... - Redesign... version 4
Somehow, some way, after more than eight months tooling around in Photoshop, I managed to give this site a major design refresh. The motivation was the May 1 Reboot, but I’ve been trying to get this done for quite some time. First, my objective was not to totally re-brand myself and my site. I like how this site’s structure and style have evolved over the past 2+ years, and I love the green & orange. So, job #1 was continuity. Keeping this in mind, there was a lot of room to improve… Logo I switched to a Macintosh almost 2... - Spring Scoots

Well, it's official -- the worst kept secret around, Flickr was "acquired":http://money.cnn.com/2005/03/21/technology/yahoo.reut/ by Yahoo!, and was announced on the "Flickr":http://blog.flickr.com/flickrblog/2005/03/yahoo_actually_.html Blog: bq. Holy smokes, SOMEBODY out there is bad at keeping secrets!! Yes! We can finally confirm that Yahoo has made a definitive agreement to acquire Flickr and us, Ludicorp. Smack the tattlers and pop the champagne corks! My initial reaction, as an avid Flickr "user":http://flickr.com/photos/nedward/, is very _wait-and-see_. Despite the "occasional downtimes":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/002505.php, I've been impressed by how they've managed to scale up, as the site has grown exponentially. But obviously, there comes a point where a Yahoo! can really... - Xmas in February
I posted some photos from this past weekend... Kim was kind enough to invite us to a Xmas in February party. The food was terrific, and the Yankee Swap fun, (though it feels weird in February). "First Snow", by presley Is it just me, or is it not supposed to snow like this before Thanksgiving? *UPDATE:* I've been fiddling around with "Flickr's":http://flickr.com/people/nedward Blog functionality, trying to find a good template that works. This one was inspired by "Matt Haughey's":http://a.wholelottanothing.org/ solution, which uses some inline styling to crop the photo. After several months of trying out different solutions for posting my photos here, I've settled on "Flickr":http://flickr.com. There are lots of "great reasons":http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/flickr-an-introduction-022281.php why, but my number one criterion is that it's easy... and Flickr is easy. I've tried uploading photos through MT manually, and I've tried using my Typepad account for photo albums... in both cases, I've dreaded the process so much that I rarely posted photos. Flickr is easy and flexible -- you have a variety of posting options, and it provides community features not available if you run a diy photo album. The problem is, when you... - Apple Picking
Last summer, after we were forced out of our beloved Mass Ave apartment, due to "negligent fire":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/001639.php, we were fortunate to be "taken in":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/001650.php by some truly great people. _Fireworks over the Charles, Boston, Massachusetts_ I generally don't enjoy staying in Boston for two holidays -- "4th of July":http://www.july4th.org/, and New Year's Eve... This town is a tame place for a party, and the concept of the _roof-deck_ seems to be lost on the landlords here. It took longer than expected to post pictures of the fire. Here are the details: We had a little fire in our building on Friday afternoon. Friday, around noon, my girlfriend Presley was at home... and she heard a bump-- which she thought sounded like a neighbor dropping something. Shortly thereafter, the building fire alarm went off and she approached the door. There was some smoke coming in. So, she opened the door, and saw that the hallway was filled with black smoke. She couldn't tell where the fire was coming from, so she closed the door and called 911.... - A Quincy BBQ, Part I

Last night, Presley and I were smack in the middle of painting our minuscule Cambridge bedroom a lovely polar blue, when I noticed a gathering of Police cars on Mass Ave. They were directing traffic away from Central Square, which I thought was odd. My initial impulse was to think that some War Hawk had called in a bomb threat on the People's Republik... But, no. Alas, there were war protesters massing down the street, and they intended to march on Harvard Sq. Watching the cops deal with this group of 200 or so kids was amusing-- rerouting traffic,... - Disciplining Cats
Our kitten Katya is starting to piss me off. She is such a good kitty, usually, however I am amiss at how to discipline her for bad behavior. Spilling glasses of water and knocking clutter off of a dresser while Presley and I are asleep is something I must make her fear. Right now, we usually remove her from the offending environment, shout a stern "NO!", and let her run off. Lately, this isn't sufficient, so I've been giving her a little swat on her ass, but she thinks that I'm playing a game. It's all about attention... she wants... - WAP? Web-enabled?
Sooz took a picture of this website on her Sanyo Sprint PCS phone... and it actually looks cool. Because the layout is CSS, the site degrades pretty gracefully. Come to think of it, browsing the web on your cell phone must be a lot like using netscape 1.1 in 1995. No?... - Presley's Vox Amp
Presley ordered a little Vox Pathfinder 10 guitar amplifier, and it came in the mail today. I thought I'd give it a spin, and found that it sounds pretty good with just the clean Rickenbacker. I don't think it would be of much use outside your living room though, because it's palm-sized.... - Temporary Purple?
The other day, my hair was bleached white. This time around, I didn't have great luck. One shouldn't try and go too many shades darker than one's natural color. In this case, I've gone extremely dark, and the result has purple tones that are just awful.... - Temporary Platinum
I'm in the process of dying my hair brown again. Why bleach first? Well, my hair is so baby-fine and limp-- it has no texture or depth whatsoever. In fact, physicists tell me that it actually does not exist in this universe... What you see is actually a rift in the fabric of space-time. So, I have to do this, then dye it a respectable brown. This makes it look normal in color, and texture. And it's easier to style.... - Snoozing Kitty
Well, I'm having trouble coming up with anything to post on this, the final Friday of January. I so wish to thank God that the thermometer is up above freezing again. And, for this kitten named Katya. She makes all of this jobless stuff bearable.... - Stop Motion in Boston
Anil posted this link to an online photo exhibit -- Stop Motion Studies -- strange and beautiful portraits on the Red line in Boston. In these photographs, the body language of the subjects becomes the basic syntax for a series of Web-based animations exploring movement, gesture, and algorithmic montage.I love these. And, many pictures were taken in the station just down the street.... - Park Slope, Brooklyn
I snapped a few photos while Presley and I were visiting Kunta in the Slope. I loved her new neighborhood and apartment. The exterior shots are from down the block, near 7th Ave and 9th. I neglect to post a photo of Kunta's place for obvious reasons... wouldn't want any Suckahs groupies harassing her or anything. Like the huge Heineken bottle? Still haven't cracked it yet.... - Katya plays fetch
Our cat Katya is learning to play fetch like a proper dog... She has this tennis wristband of mine that we call her "binky", and she loves running around with it in her mouth. Recently we've been working on "catch"-- throwing this thing up in the air, and getting her to time it in order to catch it. She's good. So, today, I decided to start throwing the thing across the room, and BEHOLD! she brings it back, and sets it down in front of me. Check out the pics here.... - New Specs
We're continuing the pictorial theme today here in nedsville... Picked up my new eyeglasses from Eye-Q Harvard Square. Check it out here.... - Desk Construction
I finally finished building my new desk... I used a hollow-core door, which I stained green, and coated with Poly-Acryllic. Then I created a 1x4 frame underneath, outlining the desk for re-inforcement. The legs are made out of 4x4 fence post, and attatched with deck hardware. Some problems: · It had to be 6'6" long · I made it only 2' deep · It kinda looks industrial Here's some pics.... - Photographers Have Fun Too
Photographers are playful, damnit. Remember how they always framed the nude statues of justice behind John Ashcroft in photos? (link anyone?) Well here's Mass Gov. candidate Robert Reich campaigning with Bill Bradley. Do NOT, under any circumstances vote for this man in the Democratic primary.... - Look
Hi, new gallery feature up. Not much there now, but maybe i will add some stuff in the future. Vanity is so disgusting. Speaking of vanity, i need a haircut. so Cay is going to hook me up tomorrow. And, Gorillaz Live in Boston go on sale tomorrow. They are playing Avalon....
