- Blogging for 7 years?
I'm totally getting old! I just realized that I missed my "blogging" anniversary... On this past July 11, this site hit the 7 year mark. wow. FIrst Post? It was about that brick of a digital camera (point-n-shoot) that I bought that summer. My original weblog was on blogger, and then was migrated to a ned.suckahs.org, when we set up the suckahs domain in July 2001. (More on that here.) In February 2005, I decided to split it out into the domain I use today.... - Windows Live Writer (Beta)
I’m posting this from inside Windows Live Writer, a newly released “weblogging” application by Microsoft. It’s a slick little windows app, with support for publishing to Movable Type, Wordpress, as well as Live Spaces, by default. Paul Stamatiou has an extended review, but here are some of the features: WYSIWYG Authoring Spell Check Photo Publishing Map Publishing, (via Live Local) Compatibility with Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress (and many others) Also, like most good WYSIWYG editors, it allows you to toggle over to HTML code view (taking a quick look at this post, I see that it writes pretty clean code). Note:... - Vox Upgrade
Well, I finally have access to a blog on Vox… (the starter account is little more than an online profile). Seems like other people also complained: With this release, we are also responding to your feedback that the whole starter account thing wasn’t working and have decided to shelve that feature for now. Last week, we upgraded all starter accounts to standard accounts (yay!) and have turned that account level off. It seems pretty cool, but I don’t have any invites! So, I have no friends. If you’re on Vox, add me to your neighborhood.... - (Re) Launches
It’s the end of a week, so I thought that I’d note a few new things that I’ve seen this week. First, Anna just launched Door Sixteen, which will document the renovation and restoration of the late-1800s brick rowhouse just bought in Newburgh, NY. I used to read her old blog, Absolutely Vile, every day, so I’m glad to see that she’s back. Veerle launched her redesigned blog this week, using Expression Engine and a whole lot of magic. A complete, beautiful piece of work, which makes my blog feel completely inadequate and irrelevant. Last and certainly not least, Todd,... - 24 Ways
24 Ways is a kind of advent calendar for markup geeks. I’m now in the process of redesigning (as oposed to realigning) my portfolio site, and it’s been fun tuning in to these little tutorials. My favorites include: An Explanation of Ems I love using ems Introduction to Scriptaculous Effects for a little javascript splash Putting the World into World Wide Web I work in localization, so I enjoy this kind of thing.... - PageRank and Me
When I switched this weblog’s domain from ned.suckahs.org to nedward.org a while back, I wanted to maintain both URLs for a transition period, so as not to lose readers. Sounds innocent enough, but since then, Google has stopped deep-indexing this site. On the advice of Casey, I tried re-directing with 301s, providing a sitemap with every entry on this site, and a whole lot of other trickery… all without luck. To this day, searching the old domain is more fruitful than searching the new one. Since I’ve tried everything I can think of, I think the fact remains that ned.suckahs.org... - Mapped FTP drive
There was a great “how-to” article on Engadget yesterday: Map a drive to your FTP server. Now, tweaking that CSS file is as easy as right-click, and Edit.... - Mint: Languages
Since installing Mint, I’ve enjoyed pouring over all kinds of referrer data, without having to sort through spam bots. One of my favorite bits of visitor information, (seeing as how I work in the Localization industry), is the language of my readers. Using Marc Garrett’s Parsel Pepper (plug-in), I see that my visitors are overwhelmingly English-speaking. No real surprise there, but guess what the #2 language is? Believe it or not, it’s Chinese. I have twice as many visitors from China and Taiwan than from either France, Germany, Spain or Japan… (where are my Nordic readers?) Even more surprising, when... - Yahoo! Site Search
Well, I’ve had enough with Google SiteSearch… I’ve switched this site’s search functionality over to Yahoo! Site Search. I tried, I tried, I failed, so I switched.... - 301 (Permanent redirect)
I’ve taken a second step toward fixing my Google indexing problem. On the advice of Casey, I modified my .htaccess file to rewrite all ned.suckahs.org URLs to nedward.org and send out 301s (Permanent redirects). Now, when a user arrives here via a ned.suckahs.org URL, they’ll be transparently redirected to nedward.org and Google will see the 301 message. Hopefully then, Google will get with the program. Thanks Casey!... - Have a Mint
I just ordered and installed the new site stats package Mint, which was launched today by Shaun Inman. It’s been eons since I had a reliable site stat tracker, and this package looks as good as the hype. RIP, Refer.... - BU Today
My alma mater just launched a nicely-designed portal called BU Today, which publishes (official) daily news from the university. It’s as if this school finally “get’s it” — that Public Relations matter. I’m disappointed to see that the code is full of Dreamweaver javascript, spacer GIFs, and <table>-based structure. And, the weather widget at the top is flash-based. Oh well.... - Broken
Ug… things are not too tidy around this site lately. My Site Header frustration continues, as it’s once again broken. And, my Google Site Search is still useless, despite my having created a Google Sitemap. Ugg indeed.... - MT Upgrade tomorrow?
UPDATE: Nope, it looks like we’ll get Beta 5 today It looks like we’ll have a Moveable Type upgrade tomorrow. I’ve been using the betas for a while now, and overall the experience has been positive. Though the release number only jumped to 3.2, this is a major upgrade. Those people who grumbled at the release of version 3.0, (myself included), will enjoy the new features in this release.... - Google SiteSearch
Google is playing tricks on me, lately. When I use SiteSearch to search this site, I don’t get individual results— just recent results, from my home page and RSS feeds. Case in point— pixies I’ve posted many times about this group: 1 2 3 4, etc. Yet only the home page result appears in my SiteSearch. Is it that this site’s pagerank is so low, that Google isn’t bothering to index it anymore? If anybody has some ideas, or replacement suggestions, i’d love to hear from you.... - Site Header Tweak, III
I just realized today that my site header photos were only visible if you’re visiting this site using the URL nedward.org… So, ned.suckahs.org, www.nedward.org, etc., wouldn’t load properly. Since XMLHTTP (Ajax) only works locally, I had to use Nick’s PHP proxy, but I hard-coded the script URL. To fix it, all I had to do was switch to a relative URL (“/”). Done. Thanks to Nobuko for pointing it out!... - John Doe Mexican
I received a message from our friend Karla today, about what her boyfriend Steve is up to this summer. He’s a public-school teacher, and is currently working to produce a documentary titled John Doe: Mexican, on border crossers in the Southwest. Sounds like an interesting project, which he will be blogging about: John Doe Mexican is an hour-long documentary that captures the struggle to value human life, even in death. The dead have no names here. For Mexican border crossers, Southern Arizonas Sonoran desert is an unforgiving and, all too often, murderous landscape. John Doe Mexican follows a handful of... - Site Header Tweak, II
I took a few minutes today, to try and sort out my Flickr-integrated "site header issues":http://www.jnied.com/dev/nedward.org/v4/archives/002862.php... I found that by adding just two characters to "Nick Chapman's script":http://chapnickman.com/2005/05/02/random-images-with-javascript/, I can parse the original-sized images from Flickr. However, given that I upload my photos at full-quality, it wouldn't be too advisable having 2MB images embedded in my site. So, for now, I have to create these site-header images, and tag them as "siteheader":http://www.flickr.com/photos/nedward/tags/siteheader/. I also squashed a background CSS bug, which caused short pages to look a bit strange. Nice to have the time to finally sort these things out...... - Nedward.typepad.com
I’m still paying for this Typepad site… why? Originally, I wanted to test out the service, and thought it would primarily serve as a place for off-site photo galleries… Flickr killed that need. I think it’s time to cancel.... - Site Header updates
Down with Flash! Say goodbye to SlideShowPro… I’ve decided to use Nick Chapman’s Random Images javascript class to pull the most recent photos from my Flickr Photostream. However, the Flickr RSS feed doesn’t provide the original-sized photos, so I’ve got some tiling action happening above… anyone got ideas how to make a Flickr RSS Feed, with the original-sized Photos?... - Redesign followup
Thanks again to everyone who has written me about the reboot. I’m still getting used to seeing my site looking like this. And, yes, I’m still working out a few kinks. I did receive my Flickr API key, so hopefully I’ll find some time this weekend to get my site header photos plugged-in. Nick Chapman posted his javascript solution that I mentioned in my previous post… and it looks very cool. I can’t wait to try it out.... - Redesign... version 4
Somehow, some way, after more than eight months tooling around in Photoshop, I managed to give this site a major design refresh. The motivation was the May 1 Reboot, but I’ve been trying to get this done for quite some time. First, my objective was not to totally re-brand myself and my site. I like how this site’s structure and style have evolved over the past 2+ years, and I love the green & orange. So, job #1 was continuity. Keeping this in mind, there was a lot of room to improve… Logo I switched to a Macintosh almost 2... - Reboot
Well, it’s been a long time since I’ve done a major overhaul of this site’s design… Though this site has looked very much the same for more than 2 years now, a lot has changed “under the hood”. I’ve converted it from a tables-based layout, to a transitional CSS layout, keeping the design mostly intact. I even got close to validation. But, Nedward.org is long overdue for a visual update — so, I have taken a chance, and thrown my hat into both the May 1st Reboot and CSS Reboot. The design is ready to go, after almost a year... - Site Outage
Apologies for the site outage the past 12 hours… Here is the explanation provided by my hosting company, site5.com: It appears that the permissions to your web directory were modified and no longer gave permission to apache to enter the directory. I’ve changed the permissions and your site is back up now. I love how hosting companies insist that their servers have a 99.9999% uptime… but little f*ck-ups like this don’t count, since only my site was affected, and the server was “up”. Time to email the billing department…... - Flickr!
Well, it's official -- the worst kept secret around, Flickr was "acquired":http://money.cnn.com/2005/03/21/technology/yahoo.reut/ by Yahoo!, and was announced on the "Flickr":http://blog.flickr.com/flickrblog/2005/03/yahoo_actually_.html Blog: bq. Holy smokes, SOMEBODY out there is bad at keeping secrets!! Yes! We can finally confirm that Yahoo has made a definitive agreement to acquire Flickr and us, Ludicorp. Smack the tattlers and pop the champagne corks! My initial reaction, as an avid Flickr "user":http://flickr.com/photos/nedward/, is very _wait-and-see_. Despite the "occasional downtimes":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/002505.php, I've been impressed by how they've managed to scale up, as the site has grown exponentially. But obviously, there comes a point where a Yahoo! can really... - I am a kottke.org micropatron
Just arrived back from Vegas, and still catching up on the web goings-ons, having been unplugged for nearly a week… that is a long time without a fix. Mr. Kottke quit his job to blog full-time, so I sent a few bucks his way. You should, too. This is where weblogging starts to get interesting — when you can make a living doing it, with your readers as your only shareholders…... - dot org
If the site looks a little goofy right now, (ok, stop laughing if you think it always looks goofy), hit refresh. I’ve made some changes to the mast/logo, widened the content area to hopefully make the content column more readable, and finally switched everything from a suckahs.org subdomain to the real deal: nedward.org. I’ve been putting off moving the domain for some time now, but through the miracle of .htaccess files, I’ve hopefully managed to make the move as painless as possible — ned.suckahs.org (and the 500+ archive pages) should still function properly, though I recommend you update your bookmarks!... - bostonist
I just noticed that Boston now has it’s very own bostonist.com… looking forward to checking it out. Though, I can’t imagine what could be posted about this town that would be worth reading.... - New Feeds
Some new Atom & RSS feeds added today… First up, by request, I’m offering feeds of my weblog, without the Del.icio.us links… (some people really could care less about my bookmarks): Syndicate:ATOMRSS (no DailiesATOMRSS) Also, I added feeds by Category… so, for instance, you could subscribe to just entries that I tag as Boston/Cambridge: Syndicate boston/cambridge:ATOMRSS... - Validation
I decided today to see how well or poorly this site validates, as it’s been ages since I’ve even looked— XHTML CSS 508 Overall, not bad. However, my beloved method for posting “cropped” Flickr photos to my blog is not valid — placing an anchor tag around some divs disses the rule that says “you can’t put a block-level element inside an inline element”. But I like it.... - 'Colophon' update
Yet another refresh, I’ve resurrected the colophon. Not much of interest here, but it does get its own place on the main menu…... - 'About' update
Continuing with the site refreshes, I finally pared down and updated my about page. Gone are the silly teenage quizes, and links to bands that I no longer enjoy. No big whoop… just had to do it.... - To Integrate, or not to Integrate...
Matt Haughey and Dave Shea have an interesting discussion going, concerning the integration of posts, daily links, and flickr photos into single feeds, and why this sucks. I’ve heard some grumblings a while back about my decision to fold my daily links into my main blog. (Mr. Yovanoff, I’m looking at you…) But, I still feel that a post is a post is a post. Having “dailies” appear inline with other content not only provides deeper context, but it also motivates me to write about other topics. Perhaps I will research a method to strip out my del.icio.us posts (by... - Weighted Category Lists
After a few site tweaks earlier in the week allowed me to implement new categories in this weblog, I decided to add weighted category lists, much like Flickr & Technorati. I modified an example given by hitormiss, which looks like this: <?php $minfont = 1; $maxfont = 5; $fontunit = ""; <MTCategories> $catlinks{"<$MTCategoryLabel$>"} = "<$MTCategoryArchiveLink$>"; $counts{"<$MTCategoryLabel$>"} = <$MTCategoryCount$>; </MTCategories> $spread = max($counts) - min($counts); if ($spread <= 0) { $spread = 1; }; $fontspread = $maxfont - $minfont; $fontstep = $spread / $fontspread; if ($fontstep <= 0) { $fontstep = 1; }; foreach ($counts as $catname => $count) { $catlink... - SixApart to buy LiveJournal?
There have been reports on the net in the past 48 hours, that "SixApart":http://www.sixapart.com/, (creators of "Moveable Type":http://moveabletype.org and "TypePad":http://typepad.com), is set to buy "LiveJournal":http://www.livejournal.com/. Om Malik reports: bq. The deal is a mix of stock and cash, and could be announced sometime later this month, according to those close to the two companies. If the deal goes through, then Six Apart will become one of the largest weblog companies in the world, with nearly 6.5 million users. It also gives the company a very fighting chance against Google's "Blogger":http://blogger.com and Microsoft's "MSN Spaces":http://spaces.msn.com. Leaving aside the ever-present "worries":http://www.sixapart.com/corner/archives/2004/03/just_like_start.shtml about... - No More Comments, for Now.
I had some trouble today -- seems there was a Comment Spam attack, which caused my installation of "MT":http://moveabletype.org and "MTBLacklist":http://mt-plugins.org/archives/entry/blacklist.php to crash the hosting server. So, my domains were suspended. Seems to be happening to a "lot of people":http://photodude.com/article/2592/mt-plus-comment-spam-equals-dead-site this month. Comments are turned off for now. I probably will go with a "TypeKey":http://typekey.com only option, though I may have trouble convincing my web host that everything will be stable. Anyone have ideas? (besides "switch to WordPress"...)Email me.... - Get on the Map
I've been browsing through the links of "Boston Weblogs by neighborhood":http://www.boston-online.com/Blogs/, this weekend, and noticed that there are a lot of webloggers in "Cambridge":http://www.boston-online.com/Neighboring_communities/Cambridge/Weblogs/index.html... Perhaps Cambridge deserves to be split into neighborhoods, like Boston? (Where are all you Boston folks?) Adam of "Boston Common":http://www.boston-online.com/common/ is putting this all together, and he is promising a map for all those suburbanites out in the hinterlands. If you're not listed, "add yourself":http://www.wickedgood.info/cgi-bin/links/add.cgi?ID=197, already. A couple of years ago, I was interested in creating a "Boston weblog 'T' map":http://ned.suckahs.org/archives/000824.php, but it never got off the ground. I still think it is a good idea--... - Gravatars
"Comments" are one of the most neglected areas of this site, so I am happy to annouce that I finally got around to adding "Gravatars":http://gravatar.com functionality to this site's comment posting. If you have a Gravatar, I'd love to have you post a comment and show it off. If you don't have one, get one... they're a nice way to personalize your comments. I've been admiring both "Casey's":http://nerdle.com/blog work on "Jess's weblog":http://www.frecklegirl.com/blog/archives/000258.php, and "John Oxton's":http://joshuaink.com/blog/68/get-a-gravatar implimentation, and campaign to "register":http://joshuaink.com/blog/72/im-famous Gravatars... it's kind of nice to see _comments_ get their due... I would suspect that the "Six Apart":http://sixapart.com/ people are... - Daily Bookmarks are Dead. Long Live Daily Bookmarks
I'm tired of maintaining my "link log":http://ned.suckahs.org/daily.php within my "MT":http://moveabletype.org installation. It was something I hacked together a long time ago, and never spent the time to properly sort out. Daily bookmarking is becoming quite popular these days... I remember when "Anil's":http://www.dashes.com/anil/ sidebar _was_ my daily lunchtime reading. Now, I've got a news aggregator with hundreds of feeds going. Enter "Social Bookmarks"... "Del.icio.us":http://Del.icio.us is filling that niche for bookmarks that "Flickr":http://flickr.com/people/nedward is for photography... It's an easy service to use, hosted off-site, which can be quickly integrated into your existing web log. And, there is that "social" component, which encourages... - Magnetbox
So, what's going on with Magnetbox? Quite a change from the "old":http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:0OsOE4EJGgwJ:www.magnetbox.com/&hl=en site...... - Moveable Type 3.0
Since the licensing structure has been revamped, I thought I'd spend a few minutes updating "Suckahs.org":http://suckahs.org (and all it's weblogs) to "MT 3.0":http://www.movabletype.org/get_movable_type_personal.shtml. Honestly, the motivation for the upgrade was recent barrages of comment spam. "MT-Blacklist":http://www.jayallen.org/projects/mt-blacklist/ was a good patch, for a while, but I think the only safe method to both allow comments, and stop your site from becoming a 1-stop billboard advertisement for "penis enhancements", and mortgage financiers, is comment registration. If you'd like to comment, (there are 1 or 2 of you), I'd suggest registering with "TypeKey":https://www.typekey.com/. Registered commenters will be posted right away, and everyone else... - Terminal blog
I stumbled upon an interesting blog design in my "referrals":http://ned.suckahs.org/refer/ -- "klypso.com":http://klypso.com/. Paul used "Terminal" for his blog's typeface. It's quick-loading, lean-and-mean, but Paul chose to forgo the "CSS trend":http://www.zeldman.com/, and build it with old-fashioned _Tables_. As soon as I saw it, I had a flashback to college and X-Windows, "Lynx":http://www.delorie.com/web/lynxview.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnedward.org, Emacs... And then back to high school and 9600-baud connections to BBSs. We've come a long way, no?... - Comments
I fixed a little bug in my _comment_ template, which was launching new windows when you hit _post_. I got tired of secretly waiting for MT 3.0 to come out, that I decided to have a look, and fix it.... - New PHP
As you'll no doubt notice, there are errors sprinkled around the site, such as: bq. Warning: main(): stream does not support seeking in/home/suckahs/public_html/jnied/dev/nedward.org/v4/index.phpon line 974 It seems that Site5, my web host, has decided to upgrade PHP on my server... Looks like I'll be editing stuff this weekend. *UPDATE*: I found this little page, which helped me smooth things out in a matter of minutes.... - New yovanoff.com
Jason redesigned. Now, he's got to start writing more regularly... as does yours truly.... - <ul>s and <li>s in CSS
I hope someone can help me with this CSS problem / bug: <ul> and <li> are defined as such: ul { margin:.5em 0 1em; padding:0; list-style-type:none;} ul li { background:url("/img/bullet.gif") no-repeat 11px .7em; margin:0; padding:0 0 2px 18px; line-height:1.5em; } But, in Firebird for the PC, I get an undesdesirable "second" bullet on a:hover: No other browser seems to do this, though I haven't been able to test a mozilla browser on a Mac. Is it a bug? Or is there a hack that would fix it?... - Persistent Annoyance
I still can't figure out what's wrong with my CSS... it crashes IE5 on Mac OSs 9-X, and Win98. A good chunk of my audience gets a crashed browser when they visit. HELP! UPDATE: Matt Jacobs has earned my total respect and humility for pointing out this little problem: bq. I figured out what the problem is and it's not your fault. It's in here: bq. #gray { float: left; padding: 8px 5px 8px 8px; font: 82% "lucida grande", arial, verdana, sans-serif} bq. For some reason, the float:left in this id is causing the browser to crash. If you take... - Refer makes it's return!
Finally, I have access to detailed Referrers... courtesy Dean. Our increasingly pathetic server was choking on writing to MYSql before. Also, I'm getting really annoyed with a bug that causes IE 5 on the Mac to crash. I can't tell if its CSS or in the markup... Looks great in Safari and WIN IE 6.... - Slight Site Tweaks
Our domain has been a wreck in the past couple of weeks -- which is why I started posting on Typepad. Thanks to Ben at Magnetbox for kindly mentioning this site. I love visiting Magnetbox every day... wish I could find an RSS feed. Also, thanks to Jason Kottke for adding this site to his "not recommended" sidebar. And, since we've been dumping and importing MySQL dbs like banshees around here, it made sense to also upgrade the usability of this site: * + Titles now link to the full entry * + Graphical headings on the sidebar link to... - Danno returns
Albany Dan makes a triumphant return (sort of), to Suckahs.... - Annoying Floating Flash Ads
I really like what Boston Common does-- collecting snippets from Boston-area blogs, and displaying them in aggregated meme-like fashion. I get a lot of hits from the site, and I appreciate the work Adam Gaffin does every day. BUT! Today, I noticed that Boston Common is now running floating Flash (Rich Media) advertisements from Travelocity. Hovering over the content! I find these things irritating, especially when it specifically delays your access to the information. I understand the need for online advertising, and revenue, but surely this is more of an annoyance than an effective marketing tool. Eyeblaster was, I believe,... - Suckahs, Version 7
New Suckahs. Email bugs to me, please...... - 500th post on Suckahs DOT org
I was happy to recap the origins of the Suckahs domain... we're up to our 500th Entry, which is so impressive to me. The purpose of the main Suckahs site was to allow a bunch of friends from Williamsville East High Shool in New York, to stay in touch. Since then, it has grown to include other friends, personal sites that showcase art or short-story writing, offer movie reviews, and stupid comments from an unemployed mouth.... - Valentine's Day
Just thought I'd do a quick holiday adjustment on the site. Hit refresh if you don't see it. Has anyone found any good Valentine links? I haven't.... - Home (page) From Nowhere
Megnut points out that James Kunstler, author of many excellent amateur urban planning books, has a website that is just AWFUL. Mr. Kunstler's observations have influenced my perceptions greatly-- I'd love to hear him weblogging about the ongoing debates surrounding the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site.... - Site Updates
Two minor little updates to this site: Guestbook makes it's re-emergence The RSS file for Suckahs Daily Bookmarks has been updated to make use of the 'link' atribute. Now, the permalink for each entry is the actual link! That is all.... - Emceebard
Emceebard relaunches this weekend, powered by Moveable Type, and looking smart, I think. Matt is a friend, who is a music writer in NYC. I love the rotating photos, however it was a pain to type the small-caps captions into Photoshop! Let me know if anything is funky.... - 12" Powerbook
Todd, of What do i know, got his 12-inch Powerbook, and it's got this Dell XP user drooling.... - Valentine's Day
Ashley is already thinking about Valentine's Day:I love Valentine's Day for all the wrong reasons: conversation heart candy, an abundance of pink and red everywhere, lacey lingerie in the window of Victoria's Secret, making construction paper valentines with pornographic inserts.Nicely put, and it's not even February yet. Oh, and Heather has some cool little V-day postcards.... - Undesign?
This article on Lo-Fi web design, which includes an interview with Jason Kottke, is very interesting. Jason argues that information is more important to weblog writing (why I love RSS readers), than having glitzy, highly-graphical designs. Sites with 60k background images need not apply... I agree, begrudgenly... and I love trend reporting.... - CSS annoyances
These past few days, I've been intensely working on a weblog site for a friend... using CSS. and it's frustrating. It's nearly impossible to do anything advanced layout-wise with CSS. There are always browser inconsistencies to deal with. So after screwing with that for days on end, I decided to revert to tables. That site will be ready soon. But, I had to do something affirming with CSS, so I updated this site. Not an ounce of <table> code at all. Email me bugs (especially on the macintosh / safari / mozilla side of things.)... - Stop Motion in Boston
Anil posted this link to an online photo exhibit -- Stop Motion Studies -- strange and beautiful portraits on the Red line in Boston. In these photographs, the body language of the subjects becomes the basic syntax for a series of Web-based animations exploring movement, gesture, and algorithmic montage.I love these. And, many pictures were taken in the station just down the street.... - CSS & XHTML
I've been building my first XHTML & CSS site today. The benefits are increasingly apparent, though attempting to build a complicated layout without using any <table> tags is daunting. And boy do I love validating along the way!... - Beaver RSS aggregation tool
Well, I posted not long ago, extolling the virtues of FeedReader, but I've run into some bugs that drive me absolutely nuts. Take this for example. Everytime I restart the app, it tells me that my website has 276 new entries! That's because the app isn't properly saving or reading whether a post is marked as "read" or "unread". Sucky. I've installed all the common windows apps, and none of them comes close to the usable design & features of NetNewsWire for OsX... Apparently, I'm not the only one going through all this, too. Enter Beaver, a great new app... - Temp Site Problems
Had some server problems that caused the site to break today. Everything is back up, now.... - Gawker has RSS
I just discovered, on a whim, that gawker does provide excepts via RSS 0.91, 1.0. Now I can know instantly when Elizabeth Spiers, Editor, attacks.... - FeedReader
So, I've heard so much about this NetNewsWire RSS news reader in the past weeks and months, but unfortunately I'm currently confined to a Wintel box. So instead, I installed FeedReader, a very small and nifty RSS feed reader. I highly recommend it if you want to stay on top of news and your favorite internet sites. I'm making my entire most recent archives available, with dates, titles, html, pics & copy in RSS 2.0... - Albany Dan's Site is
DownUp
NOTICE: If anyone is wondering why the suckahs sites have been down intermittently this morning, it's because I tweaked some of the MT templates on Albany Dan's page, and there is some kind of open loop thing happening. The pages were just hanging, and eventually the server cut everything off. So now, I must rewrite his templates. UPDATE: Everything is fixed. Just took about 10 minutes of careful review to fix. Also, I got rid of all the DHTML layering that seemed so cool in 2000, and replaced it with good ole' fashioned tables. I've yet to make a site... - Fun with Sidebars
An update on the new Daily Bookmarks feature on Suckahs... Tonite I was browsing around the net, not looking for anything in particular... When i noticed something on Dawn's site: a link that opened content in the IE Sidebar. Cool, right? However, before you start jumping up and down, this only works in IE 5+ only... Netscape 6+ has sidebars too, but the code used is completely different. SO, I started working on the Javascript to sniff out the browser, (either IE or Netscape), and then to display the link to the relevant Sidebar. · If you're using IE, it... - Bye Bye Blogger
Another Blogger Blog bites the dust... I switched suckahs.org to movable type, and boy are my arms tired. Now, only if I could recoup my $35 investment in Blogger PRO. That never quite paid for itself... wow! the ability to add a title to posts! Big fucking deal.... - bookmarks
I decided to revamp my daily bookmarks (see right), to be accessible from the home page. I guess I was inspired by Anil, who regularly has interesting links.... - The Boning
This weekend was spent in a drunken reverie, and some point friday, Tbone mentioned that he wanted a website to write on. So we started brainstorming ideas, and since Tbone can quote any movie he has ever seen, we decided to try to parody a movie poster. The result is Tbone Suckahs' The Boning. You might recognize the reference. Make sure to click on some of the credits... they are favorites of Tbone, with a few random things added in for nonsensical measure.... - Moveable Type Archives
Try as I might, I can't fix the bug that started when the calendar flipped to December. On the monthly archive page, all i wanted was to display every post that wasn't categorized as a 'link'... and somehow, it only works for Dec. Nov is all fucked. · support forum I guess I'll have to figure it out somehow.... - Suckahs Swag
I added some new suckahs swag items, and a link on suckahs.org to our online shop.... - Another Blogger Site Bites the Dust
Speaking of which, I just redid Macy's ( macyme.suckahs.org ) site. I think the design is less Jetsons, and more high-end magaziney, if that makes sense. Macy looks nice, and Albany Dan and 666 goofing off in the background is in the spirit of all that is Suckahs... Sooo, of all the suckahs sites, that leaves just the main site with Blogger...... - Blogger this, Blogger that...
I'm getting increasingly worried about Blogger lately. I've since migrated presley, albanydan, and this site from Blogger to Moveable Type, but I've been resisting the move of the main domain to it, for some known reasons... For one, I paid $35 for the PRO version of Blogger, for the privledge of extra features-- most of which seem not to have shown themselves yet. Second, Blogger is easy, and it was hard enough trying to educate people enough to use that. Switching to Moveable Type would be a whole other step. But the recent hack of Blogger is kind of disturbing,... - Updates 10/17/2002
I refreshed this relatively new site, because I haven't liked it much... seemed a little dorky... Not that I'm not a dork, cos I am, but I mean the kind of dorky you don't want to even look at. So, gone are the long horizontal images of freeways and pedestrian crowds-- and welcome back yours truly. I'll be adding some more pics for your randomizing pleasure. I also added little icons for each of the topic headings, (features, movies, etc.) Not sure if I like them. Finally, a new Identity! Those are supposed to be fish. Read into them as... - suckahs.org

I found a link from burntsienna.nu that somehow i missed. Just like me... always behind.... - It's Spring
I put up a new semi-temporary design at suckahs.org, for spring. It seemed silly to have snowflakes falling in April. When I get the chance, I want to sit down with a few people and come up with a master plan for suckahs in the coming months. I'd like to extend the site to include some writing -- be it reviews, commentary, articles, features, photo essays, comix, or whatever. I don't want to turn this into a zine, that requires an intense amount of work, however it would be nice to capture and share some of the talents the group... - Mouse

Two of my favorite webloggers, Tina & Mary have both hung up their keyboards for the near future... I've enjoyed Tina's layouts and photography for almost a year now. And, Mary... well Mary's got a great eye for color, a bemused wit, and she's been some help to me with the suckahs site. She even says hi.... - The Next Suckahs Subdomain: Albany Dan
Shit dogg, so i spent some time tonight working on Albany Dan's site. Presley's new layout was relatively simple, once we got going with it. She had prepared a collage of stuff, so the idea was well-defined, before i even got into photoshop. Anyway, i'm tired as shit, so i can't stay on topic... Albany Dan's new layout. He & i had spent some time taking photos in his neighborhood, which i initially used as part of another deconstructed collage-style design. but, it didn't make sense because it lacked any sort of connection to Danno (aside from the shots of... - SUCKAHS dot ORG is live.

from wired: MIT's Media Lab is experimenting with a tool for indexing the most popular hypertext links across thousands of weblogs and has ambitious plans to turn it into a resource for the mass media. Launched last week, Blogdex is like a search-engine spider that visits about 9,000 weblogs a day looking for hypertext links.
